With renewed hope that she hadn’t felt since the first time Daemon left her months before, Dana walked on, sure that she now recognized landmarks and could find her way back to where she had started.

Chapter 11

Daemon entered his sire’s cave silently. The blackness of the water swirled around him, but his keen eyes cut through it easily. He sensed his father within, waiting.

The leader of their species spent most of his time in the massive cave. The knowledge of the species had been passed down to him when his time as leader came. Their history was not written or spoken outwardly. Instead, it was kept inside their leader, locked away like a precious treasure. Daemon wasn’t sure exactly how the knowledge would be transferred but he thought it would be like the transfer of emotions between their kind.

With a single touch they could convey more than a thousand human words. Emotion, language, was felt rather than voiced most of the time. When they did communicate, it was in their own language, a series of unspoken gestures with their tentacles and high-pitched sounds. They never communicated in the language of the humans above though their ability to understand and grasp different dialect was astounding. They had only to hear the language spoken and within a few minutes could grasp what was being said.

Darius was perched in the middle of the dark cave. The cave itself was unadorned. Their species did not value things, per say, as humans did. They lived in the trappings of the ocean, feeding on plants and small fish. They used the natural structure of the ocean floor as their home. Caves were their choice of dwelling, but tunnels dug in the sand or a deep abyss, a channel, rock pile or other structure also served to protect them from predators. It was there they lived out their long, five hundred year lives and raised their young.

Daemon’s sire sensed him approach. His eyes opened and the piercing yellow orbs, so different underneath the water than on the surface, saw right through him.

Though a series of tentacle gestures, Darius asked his young why he had come. Daemon knew that his sire sensed and felt the swirling currents of emotion clinging to Daemon. He could not hide his trepidation or his tremendous love for the human above. If he was to die, then his only regret was that he would leave her alone and she would grieve him for the rest of her life.

Why have you come? Darius asked again through swirling gestures of his tentacles.

Daemon knew it was useless to resist the pull of his sire in his mind, probing for information. He had come to confess everything, so he surrendered the images. The creature who had birthed him, a firstborn, searched through his mind. Only their leader had the power to do such a thing. He sifted through the images, the actions, the emotions.

When he knew everything, Darius’ face twisted sharply. His golden orbs filled with sadness.
